Beyond Borders is a graphic design exhibition and a cultural exchange featuring the work of graphic designers living and working in Iran. Highlighting the convergence of digital design tools, new technology, ubiquitous social networks, limitless globalism and age-old cultural traditions, Beyond Borders is a survey of Iranian poster design that has been completed in the last five years. It's an exciting hybrid that is equal parts past, present, and future. The exhibition will be hosted in the United States at the American Institute of Graphic Arts’ (AIGA) National Design Center in New York. We're working hard to raise the money that will make this exhibition possible and we need your help!

-

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Poetic TYPES at case[werks]

Where can you take a poem? We can't wait to see.

SHAG, in conjunction with Case[werks] Gallery and Station North Arts & Entertainment District, is organizing an exhibition of graphic and visual works based on this poem:

Tuning In

Imagine a poem
where the stars speak to you,
give collegial advice,
as the sun does in Frank O'Hara's
"True Account of Talking to the Sun
at Fire Island."

O'Hara! Wake up!
When I talked with your
comrade, Mayakovsky,
he was already up.

You may not be
the greatest thing on earth,
but you're okay.
Don't worry about your place in history.
Just keep on.

In my poem,
the stars whistle
thinly:

It's hard for us to care
from this great distance,
but go ahead, use us
in your humanthropomorphic way
as mirrors of your twirling selves.

The words are thrilling
though attenuated;
then, they get tinny
and begin to break up.

I think I hear burn
I think I hear explode

--Sylvia Fischbach-Braden

Entry guidelines: Use all or any part of the poem.
A revised and expanded edition of "Thinking with Type" will be published in 2010. The new edition is not a minimally-adjusted marketing ploy but a bigger, better book with more of everything: more fonts, more footnotes, more type crimes, more do's, and best of all, more don'ts. In this evening with SHAG, Ellen will share new content from "Thinking with Type." First published in 2004, "Thinking with Type" has been widely adopted around the world as a basic guide for students, designers, editors, and writers. As Lupton explains in her introduction, "I've put on a little weight since 2004, and so has this book."
